This is an small-team (3 or 4 climbers) invitation-based expedition on a rarely traveled route with some moderately steep and high-hazard terrain.
The purpose of the expedition is to document and photograph the remaining glaciers on Kilimanjaro’s summit.
In addition to steep terrain on the Umbwe portion of the route and exposure to rockfall on the Western breach route, this expedition also requires camping on the summit. This calls for some pre acclimatizing which could be achieved by climbing another Kilimanjaro Route in early June, or by climbing nearby Mount Meru, or a high altitude peak in North America or Europe just prior to departure.
So this expedition likely will not have broad appeal and is best suited to climbers with previous high altitude expedition experience, high level of fitness and comfort with exposure to moderately high-hazard terrain.
If you have an interest in joining or sponsoring this expedition, please contact me and I’ll look forward to a discussion of what’s involved. Because of the need to portage equipment, food and fuel to the summit crater, there will be additional costs involved compared to a regular seven day expedition.
