Trail Running: Pacific Crest Trail. North from Bridge of the Gods

Trail running has a myriad of advantages over pavement; it's softer, the uneven surfaces help condition ligaments and tendons, the constant input of trees and rocks enhances proprioception abilities and - for this runner -- being in the forest, puts me in a trance -- that can make an hour seem like ten minutes. 

These pictures are from an out-and-back run, starting at The Bridge of the Gods and heading north on the Pacific Crest trail. I was looking for a two hour run, so went five miles north (map) before turning around at a little campsite (which I intend to walk back in at sleep some summer's night). 

This trail is very runnable, the surface is mainly smooth (excepting some loose and rocky sections) and it's not too steep. I had a fun challenge in that I 'bonked' after turning back, so had a four-mile jog back that included some stumbling and lightheadedness (I've been training hard for running, this week and was a bit low on fuel). In a way, that is good training, once in a while, to learn how we can move and adapt - even when the tank is empty. 

A fantastic run. I saw two falcons in a nest, one other trail-runner, two hikers with a dog, a guy fishing and thousands of trees.
